One compound sign changes the farewell

A farewell with a disputed first word

The card’s ordinary note says that the writer is seasick again and is taking a train for the rest of the journey west. Below it stand three rows of symbols. The address to Mrs Forest Beefe supplies an on-card foothold for a possible signature, but the same letter assignments must explain the other rows.

A public 2024 interpretation proposed STOOD BY SWEETHEART FOREST. Much of that was close. The decisive correction is physical: the initial sign is one vertically aligned cap, dash, and cup, not two consecutive signs. Counting it once gives 22 signs in rows of 6, 10, and 6. [2]

This table applies without exceptions to the frozen sequence. Repeated O, S, E, T, and R return to the same source classes wherever they occur. It yields:

GOOD BY
SWEETHEART
FOREST

“Good-by, sweetheart. Forest.” is the readable editorial form. The physical GOOD BY remains two words, and Forest is best understood as the signature. Neither punctuation nor the surname is added to the cipher.

Correcting the earlier reading

The 24 April 2024 suggestion by YefimShifrin, later copied into Zooniverse Talk, gave the opening as STOOD. Its overlay split the compound first glyph into S and T. Source-resolution segmentation instead puts all three components in one column. The corrected 13-entry ledger then accounts for every physical sign; the proposed five-letter opening would require an extra sign. [3]

The official Clements manifest did not supply an accepted solution or key. An isolated crowdsourced SWEET token and the substantial public proposal are prior help, not absent history. The contribution here is the source-consistent correction and complete mechanical ledger.

What is not claimed

The 1918 year comes from the manifest; an exact postmark day or time is not recovered. The institutional transcription gives Beefe, although Beebe may fit the handwriting. This page keeps Beefe without claiming the family’s identity.

The card supplies thirteen letter mappings, not a complete alphabet. Bounded item-ID, phrase, Talk, Reddit, Imgur, and indexed-web checks found no earlier corrected GOOD BY reading. That establishes the first located source-consistent correction in the reviewed record, not first-ever knowledge of the farewell. [3]
