A postcard addressed to Miss Annie Kepler at Middletown, Frederick County, Maryland, is preserved as HCPortal item 1490. Its picture is captioned War Correspondents’ Memorial Arch, Gapland, Md. The catalogue gives 1911; the source does not securely fix an exact postmark day.
The ordinary message asks Annie to come to a party the next night. Three groups of angular, dotted marks interrupt the prose: one after “Hello,” one after “now,” and a short closing. The longer insert contains a sequence that visibly repeats the first group.
The rendering below records the physical frame positions and dot counts given in the source edition. It is not a facsimile; the original must be consulted for the long insert’s line wrap. The ordinary prose retains “how is times” and the broken “to- / morrow.” What do the three private groups say?
Source rendering. Line breaks follow the evidence record; square brackets mark uncertainty.

Slashes mark the wider group gaps in the longer field.
