Both sides in direct Morse, without fluent repairs

Read both sides

The message occupies seven rows on the address side and three more beside the picture caption. An address-side-only solution would omit nearly half its marks. The frozen record contains 52 physical groups and 150 marks: 27 groups and 77 marks on the address side, and 25 groups and 73 marks on the picture side. Tall overlay strokes and terminal curves are recorded separately.[1]

Direct Morse survives the comparison

Read left to right, the groups use ordinary International Morse. Fifty-one of the 52 groups are legal, including the literal slash -..-.. The seven-mark run -...--. remains one uninterrupted group and has no standard value. It cannot be split into convenient letters without changing the source.[2]

Recorded row, group-order, side, and alternating-row reversals did not improve legality and destroyed the readable source-order controls. That is the finite comparison behind the mechanism claim. It does not make every resulting word fluent English.

Complete diplomatic result

SO / GHAD / YOU / AREG / STUDYI / MORSE / CJF
WASBHONE / UPWUS/EF[-...--.] / NELCH | E | E | T

In the final row, the vertical bars stand for tall overlay strokes excluded from the letter cadence. The eight letter groups themselves read NELCHEET. An earlier compact display merged the ending into A; that display is retracted.

What the independent source check found

The verifier agreed on all 150 marks, comprising 89 dots and 61 dashes, and found no source-supported change to the anomalous groups. Repeated mark strings keep the same letter values across the two sides. The unusual forms GHAD, AREG, STUDYI, WASBHONE, and UPWUS therefore remain literal. Replacing GHAD with “glad” would be an intended-text conjecture, not the verified mark reading.[2]

What is not claimed

This is a closed mechanical edition of the two-sided Morse layer, not a complete fluent recovery of what the writer intended. One nonstandard group is unresolved, and the irregular letter sequences have not been repaired. A cleaner copy or a same-hand control documenting the writer’s corrections could change that judgment. Neither the sender, Miss Ramsay’s given name, nor a naval connection is established by the stock picture of H.M.S. Resolution.

The actual cancel is Forres, 7.45 p.m., 8 October 1903, correcting earlier 1906 and 1907 readings. HCP had no key or note, and the bounded exact-item audit found no prior solution or related traffic. The local 1,875-record snapshot had one record for this recipient. These are limits on the checked evidence, not proof that no earlier reader existed.[3]
