The third telegram on page 258 of the Huntington Library's Fort Monroe ledger is headed “Hd Qrs A of J Nov 2 1864”. It is addressed to Geo D Sheldon at Ft Monroe and closes with R OBrien. The initials and headquarters abbreviation are part of the visible record, as are the literal unit letters and the last two words, “raining fast”.
The body repeatedly returns to a similar pattern: “pagan”, a unit letter, an ordinary description, and a run of other words. Terms such as “napoleon”, “inch ordnance”, and “parrots” remain readable, while the surrounding sequences resist an ordinary reading. In all, the complete entry contains 84 alphanumeric tokens, with 69 between the address and the closing operator name. The written ampersand is retained in the specimen although it is not an alphanumeric token.
The source image reads a lower-case m after the first pagan, where the volunteer transcription has in. The specimen uses that audited image reading and leaves the unusual spellings as they stand. The other two telegrams on the page are separate documents. What does this one say, and which repeated words can be explained consistently across its rows?
