Three full readings and twenty-eight bounded partials

What this packet actually resolves

The record covers thirty-four postcards. Three already supplied public plaintexts. Of the thirty-one other objects, this edition gives three complete new diplomatic readings, seven substantial continuous partial readings, and twenty-one sets of secure phrases. All thirty-one source picture sides were inspected; twenty-eight still have at least one unresolved token, join, handwritten word, or margin order. The catalogue’s NEW_SOLUTION label applies to the packet’s documented result, not to thirty-four complete new solutions. [2]

Two recurring hands are kept apart: twenty-four cards address Fritz Salmen, ten address Frl. Braun. These are recipient and physical-hand groups. It would be circular to turn them automatically into “Braun writing to Salmen” and “Salmen writing to Braun.”

A public alphabet, checked on the source

Three public controls establish a deterministic alphabet of twenty-five values. I and J share 9; after that, K is 10 and Z is 25. Slashes separate letter numbers. Literal umlauts and an ampersand sometimes appear inside numerical writing and must remain as written.

Number rangeValues
1–9A B C D E F G H I/J
10–18K L M N O P Q R S
19–25T U V W X Y Z

For example, 6/17/9/19/25 is FRITZ and 10/14/12/12/5 is KOMME. The repeated 12s supply the repeated M. The source-verified target groups for BITTE, MEIN, LIEBER, and NICHT follow the same values. No arbitrary secret key is recovered here; the work is reading the actual numerals and tracking damage without guessing.

Three full editions and seven substantial partials

The following is the German source edition. The group labels FS-A and FB-B mean the Fritz-addressed and Braun-addressed hands respectively. They are not sender names. Ellipses mean unresolved text has been omitted; bracketed words remain uncertain. [2]

HCP1004 ; 1900-10-25 ; FS-A ; Dortmund → Hier

Central/lower numerical body:

MEIN LIEBER FRITZ! KOMM HEUTE ZU MIR. JA BITTE. WERDE DIR AUCH WAS HÜBSCHES GEBEN. RATE WAS? VIELE GRÜSSE UND KÜSSE. FRANZ.

Separately located margin components:

WIE GEFALLEN DIR DIE KRIEGER?

BIS HEUTE ABEND. VON DEINE D.L. FRANZ.

The awkward VON DEINE is the source reading and is not repaired to von deiner. JA is source 9/1. The physical components are complete; their relative prose order is not invented.

HCP1106 ; 1902-03-29 ; FS-A ; Dortmund → Dortmund

MEIN LIEBER FRITZ! WÜNSCHE DIR, FRÖHLICHE & OSTERN MIT VIELEN GRÜSSEN UND KÜSSEN. DEINE D.L.

The source itself places & before OSTERN; it is preserved. Umlauts are literal source marks.

HCP1006 ; 1902-05-17 ; FB-B ; Dortmund → Hier

SO EIN AUSFLUG DER IST GUT WENN ER NICHT VERGESSEN ABER. MIT VIELEN KÜSSEN. 17.V.02. DEIN FRITZ.

The first sentence is a grammatical fragment in the source and is not silently rewritten.

Substantial secure continuous transfers

HCP1001 ; 1900-11-03 ; FS-A ; Dortmund → Hier

KOMME BITTE HEUTE ABEND. MEIN LIEBER FRITZ! HEUTE HABE ICH DICH NOCH GAR NICHT GESEHEN. DU KOMMST DOCH HEUTE ABEND? … ERWARTE DICH BESTIMMT HEUTE … [WERDE] DAS GEHEIMNIS [ERZÄHLEN] … MORGEN … VIELE GRÜSSE [UND] KÜSSE.

HCP1000 ; 1900-11-17 ; FS-A ; Dortmund → Hier

MEIN LIEBER FRITZ! HEUTE BIST DU NICHT HIER. MUSS DICH LEIDER MISSEN. DOCH MORGEN BIST [DU] MEIN LIEBSTER WIEDER BEI MIR. DANN DARF ICH DICH HERZLICHST KÜSSEN. … MORGEN KOMMST DU WIEDER … FRINZ … FREUT SICH SEHR … BIS MORGEN.

HCP1008 ; 1901-03-25 ; FS-A ; Dortmund → Dortmund

MEIN LIEBER FRITZ! TEILE DIR EBEN MIT, DASS ICH HEUTE NICHT [KOMME], WEIL ICH KRANK BIN. KOMME BITTE HEUTE. … HAUSE … BITTE … KÜSSE … DEINE D.L. [FRANZ].

The supplied KOMME completes a run across the line/printed-caption boundary and remains bracketed pending a cleaner diplomatic read of that join.

HCP999 ; 1902-04-01 ; FS-A ; Dortmund → Dortmund

MEIN LIEBER FRITZ! HABE DICH HEUTE MITTAG DOCH NICHT GESEHEN. SCHREIBE MAL. KOMMST DU AUCH HEUTE ABEND? [two clauses unresolved] BIS HEUTE [ABEND?], MEIN LIEBER FRITZ. SEI HERZLICH GEGRÜSST UND GEKÜSST VON DEINER D.L. FRANZ.

Margin:

LIEB, KOMME BITTE HEUTE ABEND.

HCP1011 ; 1902-05-03 ; FB-B ; Dortmund → Dortmund

LIEBE FRÄNZ! MUSST MICH HEUTE NOCH MAL ENTSCHULDIGEN. KOMME MORGEN FRÜH. … [closing unresolved].

Ä in FRÄNZ and Ü in FRÜH are literal marks embedded in the numerical writing.

HCP1028 ; 1902-05-20 ; FS-A ; Dortmund → Dortmund

MEIN LIEBER FRITZ! WIE GEHT ES DIR? HOFFENTLICH BIST DU GESUND. … [long middle unresolved] … EMPFANGE VIELE …

The opening is continuous and source-secure; the dense remaining body is retained only as bounded islands below the transcript threshold.

HCP1002 ; 1902-08-01 ; FS-A ; Dortmund → Dortmund

MEIN LIEBER FRITZ! KOMME BITTE HEUTE ABEND. [VERMISST JA. SCHAU…?] ICH ERWARTE DICH, UND FREUE MICH SEHR, WENN ICH BEI DIR SEIN KANN. O, KOMME BITTE. [ALSO, LIEBE…] BIS GLEICH. EMPFANGE VIELEN INNIGE UND KÜSSE. VON DEINER D.L.

The source grammar VIELEN INNIGE is preserved.

These are text islands, not fluent reconstructions of entire cards. Their order is reported only where the physical record supports it.

What the verification adds

The three exact closures are HCP1004, HCP1106, and HCP1006. On HCP1004 the central body and two margins are complete, but their prose order is not invented. VON DEINE remains awkward. HCP1106 preserves the ampersand before OSTERN and its literal umlauts. HCP1006 preserves a broken first sentence ending ABER. Those features would be easy to lose if a plausible German paraphrase replaced source checking.

The earlier inventory’s zero-full-reading decision was superseded by these complete editions. Its physical-hand and route inventory remains valid. The final packet records 31 of 31 non-control bodies inspected, rather than claiming exhaustion of every card those correspondents might have written.

Source transcription limits

The saved full transcripts are decoded editions, not complete numerical source streams. The problem page can supply only six recorded groups from HCP1001 and a source-coverage inventory for all 34 cards. The complete new readings can be checked against the linked originals; this publication does not manufacture missing ciphertext from those readings.

What is not claimed

The alphabet and public controls were known before the campaign, including public comments on Klaus Schmeh’s 2020 discussion. HCP996 even carried plaintext while labeled “Not solved.” A status label cannot establish publication history. The bounded 28 August 2026 audit covered all thirty-four records, sixty-eight side images, the public controls, the collection paper, that discussion, and declared exact searches. It found no prior full exact-item reading for the three new closures in those surfaces. [3]

The other twenty-eight results remain partial and make no full-solution novelty claim. No closing such as FRANZ, FRINZ, FRÄNZ, FRITZ, or D.L. establishes a legal identity. Better images or the physical cards could resolve remaining joins; the current page does not silently compose the missing prose.
