A gossip note, with one destroyed number

A missing value at the beginning

Sixteen physical rows contain 20 separated groups and 85 numeric positions. The first position survives as a location, but ink has destroyed its value. An obliterated nonnumeric band is a different source loss and lies outside the numeric count. Keeping those distinctions prevents an inferred first word from becoming a supposedly observed number.[1]

A direct alphabet, including the mistakes

The unchanged table 1=A, 2=B, …, 26=Z reads all 84 legible numbers. It gives ?ROM in the first row, followed by ELSIE, HELLO, and GRACE. This is not permission to replace the destroyed first number with a 6 or to regularize later names.[2]

For orientation, the following readable version marks every intended-word repair. It suggests a note passing on gossip about another girl; it does not supersede the exact numbers.

Verification did not erase the anomalies

Native anomaly verification retained the source values behind every odd word. All 84 readable numbers then decoded and encoded back exactly; the destroyed first position remained unresolved. ANMTEFO is precisely 1-14-13-20-5-6-15. Its attractive interpretation as “another” is editorial sense, not an additional cryptographic result. The faint pencil note [Do not write back.] is retained at medium confidence.[2]

What is not claimed

Elsie is the recovered name at the opening, not a securely identified person. There is no stamp, cancel, established mailing date, postal origin, or delivery history. The stock print WILL YOU BE MY VALENTINE? is on the physical card but supplies no proof of courtship. The reading cannot establish who the people in the apparent gossip were or whether its statements were true.

HCP marked the item “Not solved” and supplied no key or note. The bounded exact-item and sibling screen found no prior reading. The contribution is a source-faithful numerical edition new to the checked sources, retaining one destroyed value and all source anomalies; universal first priority is not claimed.[3]
