Page 374 of the Huntington Library's Fort Monroe telegraph ledger contains three separate messages. The first, TEL784, is headed “Ft Monroe, Va., Mar. 3d 1865”, addressed to S. H. Beckwith at City Point, and signed by Geo. D. Sheldon. Its service note says it was sent at 1 P.M. The next telegram begins under its own March 4 heading and is not part of this problem.
TEL784 has 120 counted tokens in its complete entry. Most of its body consists of recognizable English clauses, interrupted by words such as “Viola”, “Jersey”, and “quadroon”. The written name Wilder recurs. Other stretches, including “response able” and “in vest tea gay ting”, are split in ways a modern editor might be tempted to silently repair.
The transcription below keeps those source forms. It also restores the visible interlinear word “canby” to its place between “administration” and “made”. The library's volunteer text contains an extra Monroe after City Point that the audited source reading excludes. These are source-reading decisions, not an interpretation of the message. Can the whole body be explained without turning each unusual spelling into whichever word would make the best sentence?
